The court ordered the state to finish the admissions process within six weeks based on the evaluations of several boards.
Earlier this month, the Maharashtra government announced that it will organise a Common Entrance Test (CET) for admissions to first-year junior colleges in the academic year 2021-22.
Because the CET would cause students "gross unfairness," it is "appropriate for us to interfere."
As a result of the court order, the state must finish the admissions process within six weeks based on evaluations from multiple boards.
It had been claimed that the announcement was discriminatory since it would use the syllabus of the state board and unfairly treat students from other boards.
Ashutosh Kumbhakoni, the state's attorney general, requested the court not to issue any adverse orders since they would interfere with the start of the school year in India.
The admissions to FYJC would be based on merit and choice, and all students would have the same opportunity to get into the college of their choice.
Priority would be given to students who took the CET at the time of admission, he said.
The state, Kumbhakoni said, conducted a video conference meeting with representatives of all boards and requested them to supply a bank of 200 questions to the state, against the objections of students from other boards.
State had suggested four 25-mark exams; however, it was ready to accept three papers based on other boards' question banks.
